We Receive Christmas Cards From Our Members
Stephanie’s passion is skiing, but when she broke her arm climbing an Alaskan wilderness ski trail, she was concerned about the financial ramifications of her accident. With only her income to lean on, she was certain the bill headed her way would create a significant hardship for her. With the Christmas season quickly approaching, the timing couldn’t have been worse.
What Stephanie didn’t realize was that her health plan had her covered all year long. Thanks to her employer’s coverage, Stephanie received top notch care and was left with more than enough to buy all her Christmas gifts. And, despite the unplanned interruption to her season, she even got her Christmas cards in the mail on time! (We know, because she sent us one.)
Inside the card, Stephanie thanked us for our prompt, no-hassle service, which allowed her to get back to what she loves. (Our pleasure, Stephanie!) We get that, because our passion happens to be service, and we’ve made a commitment to provide nothing short of excellence when it comes to helping all of our members get what they need and get back to their healthy lifestyle. Not just around the holidays, but every day.
So, ski on, Stephanie, ski on. We know the winter snow lasts a while in Alaska and we’ve got you covered.

LEADERSHIP TEAM
EBMS’ leadership is comprised of a highly energetic team of industry experts who have the intelligence and insight to step outside their comfort levels and envision the kaleidoscopic opportunities available for EBMS in this complex healthcare marketplace, with its shifting patterns of consumer and provider needs. Strategizing, predicting and forecasting these trends is what will differentiate a company like EBMS, that remains an industry leader, and one that simply is part of the pack.

OUR STORY
Rick and Nicki Larson founded EBMS in 1980 as Montana’s first Third Party Administrator (TPA) and designed their first self-funded health insurance plan for a Billings manufacturing company. At the time, they had no idea they were providing a future template of quality, honesty and innovation that has been emulated by industry peers across the country. After more than three decades, the manufacturing company is still a loyal EBMS client today.
Throughout our 32-year history, EBMS has thrived and excelled within a kaleidoscopic landscape of evolving needs in the healthcare marketplace. As one of the founding partners of the
Billings Wellbeing Institute, EBMS was one of the first to boast a comprehensive wellness program.
To articulate and leverage our unique capabilities, the decision was made in 2011 to rebrand the company to better reflect the qualities differentiating EBMS from the pack. Through the rebranding process, EBMS leaders and employees found we are not simply third party administrators. Although we do an outstanding job administering claims and benefits, a compelling advantage of EBMS was found in the way it helps customers achieve balance in their daily quest for health and wellbeing.
This journey of corporate introspection helped us better understand the importance of balance between work, family, and community in sustaining good health. The result…balance equals wellbeing and wellbeing equals EBMS.
“To me, Rick epitomizes what makes the TPA industry so successful. His ability to envision along with a willingness to innovate is evident in the success of EBMS. What may not be as obvious is his willingness to share these things with others. Rick has obviously been successful in building EBMS; he has also been instrumental in helping build an industry that successfully serves millions of people every day. His contribution has been tremendous, and his legacy will remain with those who benefited from his wisdom and generosity.”
-- Todd E. Archer, CEO/President, Mutual Assurance Administrators, Inc.
Through the process, a new EBMS mission statement also came to life:
EBMS designs strategies to transform the health and wellbeing of individuals, companies, and communities.
EBMS’ new brand embraces the fun and friendly culture that has been the foundation of the company from the beginning. It represents the balance and synergy the company strives to create, positively affecting the culture of every relationship, business, and community with which it interacts.
The core values of the new rebranding efforts are eight simple synonyms for wellbeing, which represent the Benefits of Balance EBMS intends to deliver to each person and company:
Balance, Symmetry, Stability, Equilibrium, Rhythm, Clarity, Harmony and Synergy = the EBMS Benefits of Balance.
By making the Benefits of Balance a wellbeing priority within its own walls, we hope to set a new standard and help others make it a priority for themselves, their businesses and their own communities as well.
EBMS enjoys a nation-wide reputation for proactive innovation. With corporate headquarters in Billings and regional offices in Portland and Denver, EBMS has achieved national prominence by staying true to its simple core value of offering the highest quality of customer service.
Rick Larson is truly a pioneer, leader, and inspiration for the evolution of the modern TPA concept. I met him during an early SPBA meeting and I remember his quote, "I came to this meeting not knowing what a TPA is. I discovered I am one!" He quickly went on to be in the forefront of hundreds of issues in shaping government policy impacting employers and plans. He was instrumental in the growth and strength of SPBA, and served as chairman of the board at a crucial time. He represented SPBA and the employee benefit industry in endless ways. He never failed to reach out, even to competitors, to share ideas and to make improvements in their work. He represents the ultimate in professionalism. What’s most impressive of all is that he did this with a self-effacing and unfailingly friendly demeanor. What a great guy who is a credit to our industry!
-- Fred Hunt, President 1980-2011, Society of Professional Benefit Administrators.

WHAT IS WELLBEING?
The concept of wellbeing means something different to everyone, it is in a constant state of motion; always changing and evolving based on the individual or business.
At EBMS, Wellbeing = Balance therefore; what we extend to our members and partners is the Benefit of Balance.
Balance is defined as:
- Equal distribution of weight
- Something used to produce equilibrium
- Mental steadiness or emotional stability
- Habit of calm behavior
- Clarity of thought and judgment
- To arrange, adjust, or proportion symmetrically
- To settle by paying what remains due
- All parts moving together in synergy
- Producing a harmonious rhythm based on the collection of equal parts and movement
By supporting each individual in achieving Symmetry, Clarity, Synergy, Rhythm, Harmony, Stability, and Equilibrium within 5 health environments: career, social, financial, physical, and community, we’re able to improve quality of life for people, families, and businesses.
What is wellbeing?
What does EBMS do to create wellbeing?
What does wellbeing mean for business?
“(The Larsons) gave through philanthropy and volunteerism to open the new addition to ensure that more than 600 families each year would have lodging while their child was in the hospital. I believe a quote from Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s founder summarizes the contributions that Nicki and Rick have made and continue to make, ‘The Charity has brought light to children searching for dreams and purposes for all of us who have been searching for some way to share our good fortune with those who are less fortunate.’”
--Connie Grammens, Executive Director, Billings Ronald McDonald House
WHAT DOES EBMS DO TO CREATE WELLBEING?
Through technology, benefit design, programs to direct appropriate care, communication and seamless implementation of best-practice strategy, EBMS designs holistic solutions to impact health and wellbeing of individuals, organizations and communities.
In Billings, Montana, EBMS aligned with various local partners to create the
Billings Wellbeing Institute, focused on improving wellbeing in the entire community through programs related to:
- Education
- Communication
- Research-sharing
- Self-assessment
- Motivational techniques
Contributors to the Wellbeing Institute convene regularly to initiate innovative, citizen-powered changes in prevention and wellness activities. These initiatives promote higher individual health status, lower healthcare costs, higher productivity, and improved economic and social vitality. The combined efforts of the strategic partners will educate individuals and organizations on the inter-connected elements of wellbeing and how these shape the lives of every Billings resident.

WHAT DOES WELLBEING MEAN FOR BUSINESS?
Employee wellbeing is the new strategy of smart employers. Focusing on the individuals of the organization allows for the following benefits:
- Competitive advantage: Gallup statistics show only 8% of American workers strongly agree that an organization helps them improve their physical health. Companies who design benefit programs and develop a culture to support all areas of wellbeing are at a great advantage. They’ll attract higher quality workers and maintain their workforce over extended durations, decreasing turnover and associated costs.
- Decrease in healthcare costs: Gallup statistics also confirm employees with thriving career wellbeing had fewer sick days, lower incidence of depression and lower overall annual healthcare costs.
- Increase in productivity: Companies who focus their efforts on employee engagement enjoy higher levels of productivity and better delivery of service to their customers.
- Improved communication: An increased level of trust and open communication is seen as stronger relationships are formed among work groups and new solutions are presented.
- Positive brand image: As employees begin to focus more on their own wellbeing, they become role models for their families, friends and business relations. These, lead-by-example individuals are walking billboards for the businesses they work for. As their wellbeing is seen and shared with their individual networks of relationships, the business brand is naturally extended and the community as a whole begins to benefit.

OFF TO A GREAT START
Making any change is never easy, and moving to a new benefits administrator tops the list for potential headaches. After less than stellar service from her company’s prior administrator, Vicki was nervous about the implementation process with her new team at EBMS. With only two weeks to complete the transition, and a few thousand miles separating Vickie from her new EBMS Account Manager, Billie, Vickie braced herself for conference call introductions and impersonal emails.
What Vicki didn’t know was that Billie was already committed to making face-to-face meetings happen, despite the time crunch. With a few adjustments to her schedule and some recalculated flight plans, Billie was on a plane headed Vicki’s way.
Within a week of Billie’s first visit, Vicki’s employees had received their ID cards and Vicki was confident the rest of the transition would run just as smoothly as it began. Vicki could see the old days of impersonal contacts were about to be replaced with nothing short of excellent service from Billie and the EBMS team.
At EBMS, our service doesn’t end at the sale, service is what we sell. It’s our commitment to deliver top-notch service to every client, no matter the distance. That’s our passion and it’s what we do best.
After all, flight schedules can change, but good service never should.

FAQ
TEACHABLE MOMENTS
Jeff knows a little something about teachable moments. As a first-year teacher, he witnesses them every day with his students. As the new man on the job, Jeff has experienced a bit of a learning curve himself, including how to access the valuable health benefit programs offered by his employer. Between grading papers and parent-teacher conferences, the last thing Jeff needed was a health plan he didn’t know how to use.
When our EBMS Client Service Representative, Jennifer, realized Jeff was a new enrollee with the plan, she decided to share her common passion for teaching and used the opportunity to create a teachable moment with Jeff. Jennifer gave Jeff all the information he needed to be able to better understand his plan and how it could work for him. By the time Jeff was off of the phone, he understood how to use his Flexible Spending Account and his preventive care benefits. He even knew which in-network providers he could call to schedule an appointment, and discovered how to check his most recent claims data on EBMS’ innovative online platform, miBenefits.
Now, thanks to that first phone call Jeff made to EBMS, he’s committed to seeing his primary care physician on an annual basis; and, we’re happy to report, he’s in perfect health. After all, we want our teachers to remain healthy so our kids can do the same. All it takes is a little, well, education.

I have greatly enjoyed working for Rick for nearly 18 years. I was the 45th employee to be hired at EBMS and feel like I have “grown up” with the company. EBMS is like my second family.
Rick is a visionary and leads by example, providing an outstanding self-funded benefit program for EBMS. I personally appreciate the miCare (onsite) clinic and miRx prescription program, which save my coworkers and me countless hours and money!
-- Lisa Joki, EBMS Lead Finance Specialist
What an asset Nicki is to the self-funded industry! She has led it through many changes over the years, emphasizing the need to provide healthcare to members with cost-effective programs, while educating legislators and community leaders on legislative and regulatory issues affecting self-insurance. Anyone who has worked with Nicki has been touched by her ability to lead with integrity and class, whether leading an industry association or participating on a community board. We are fortunate to have Nicki as an industry ambassador and I am fortunate to have had the privilege of knowing her!

MATTERS OF THE HEART
When Mark came to work the day his company was putting on a health fair, he expected to get his blood drawn, receive his employer’s incentive for attending, and get back to work. After all, Mark was in his mid-thirties, wasn’t overweight, and felt like his health was in top-notch condition.
What Mark didn’t know was his employer’s Wellness Program, administered by EBMS, was about to save his life.
When a nurse at the health fair repeatedly took Mark’s blood pressure only to receive an inordinately high number each time, he advised Mark to leave work and head straight to the emergency room. After numerous tests, Mark was diagnosed with an enlarged heart valve—a potentially life threatening condition.
Today, Mark treats his enlarged heart valve with medication and monitoring by his physician; however, had it not been for the health fair, he would never have known about his condition. With the help of Mark’s EBMS Wellness Coach and his primary care physician, Mark is on the road to becoming as healthy as he actually feels. He’s eager to share his story and we’re happy about that, because our passion is helping people and we’re committed to helping others just like Mark—one health fair at a time.

OUR PROCESS
What is keeping your executives up at night?
According to the Towers Watson 2010 Employer Survey on Purchasing Value in Health Care Report [1], employers identified three (3) concerns as their top challenges in maintaining affordable benefit coverage:
- Employees' poor health habits
- Underuse of preventative services
- High cost catastrophic cases.
All issues can be addressed by a process that successfully integrates plan design, a full array of health management offerings, best-practice communication strategy, outcomes-based incentive models and stringent cost containment measures. EBMS’ sophisticated, state-of-the-art claims system coupled with robust analytics provides a platform to successfully integrate all areas of a benefit program—from plan design, to care coordination with early identification and intervention from health professionals, directing members to the ‘right provider, at the right facility at the right time,’ from best-practice application of incentives (or “orange colored sticks”) to client-branded communications. EBMS’ proven process increases awareness and appreciation for the client-sponsored benefit program, drives appropriate utilization, identifies additional cost savings, builds a stronger level of engagement between the member and their provider, and ensures a superior level of service for the member, provider, and employer, alike.
So, for the employers who work with EBMS, they can be sure that our processes, people and system are all aligned to help them maintain a healthier, more productive workforce, reduce healthcare costs and maintain an attractive, affordable benefit program. Don’t take our word for it,
experience it for yourself (or ask one of our satisfied customers!).

BENEFITS
How a product or service benefits you varies based on your position in the organization, role in the industry, or individual lifestyle preferences. Knowing how each person's environment and responsibilities impact the level of value they expect to receive, it would be foolish of us to talk about benefits as if they apply to everyone the same way. So we don't. At EBMS, everything we do is individualized, including the list of benefits we provide:
Don't settle for a relationship that was designed for someone else.

From the talented, highly visible members of the Executive Committee throughout every arm of the organization, EBMS team members go above and beyond the call of duty to extend a hand to our customers, their co-workers and their communities.

Leadership Team
SERVICES
EBMS employs a talented team of over 300 benefit experts and healthcare professionals, all working towards a common goal; positively impacting the health and wellbeing of each and every person we connect with.
Although we’ve been called a Third Party Administrator and have excelled to one of the nation’s leaders in that role, what we really are is something uniquely different.
We’re investigators, searching our clients’ business environments for patterns of good and opportunities for improvement.
We’re inventors, engineering new benefit programs based on the individual needs of clients, rather than expecting all to fit the same mold.
We’re daredevils, comfortable existing in the world of “that’s never been done before,” when others in the healthcare industry are comfortable only with what has always been.
We’re coaches, leading by example and building strength and coordination in our clients so they continue to grow long into the future using the foundation learned through the process.
And finally, we’re chefs, combining a variety of ingredients including industry partners, technology, innovation, and strategic thought, to create something of substance and nutritional value for each member, business, and community.
As I have worked with Cori for a number of years here at EBMS and in the last few years have been under her guidance and leadership. What I have seen in working with Cori is her passion and desire to help a client or member even if that means following up on a matter during her vacation. I have seen her demonstrate this high level of customer service on numerous occasions. Cori also is a person of integrity, which I appreciate her for. She creates that environment that the staff can go in and let her know if we have made a mistake and she helps us work through the issue(s) and provides guidance on how we can improve our processes for the future. Cori cares for her staff and utilizes their strengths not only for their growth and development but to help the organization move forward in the industry.

-- Laura Rookhuizen, EBMS Wellness Manager
I have worked with Rod for so long I can’t imagine the world of employee benefits without him. If I have an off-the-wall idea or esoteric question, Rod is one of the few industry colleagues I call for advice. If he does not know the answer to my question, he knows where to find it, or points me in the right direction. I can count on him to generate creative input on any ideas I present to him. I appreciate that Rod is willing to put the client first and always attempts to come up with a win-win strategy. EBMS is lucky to have Rod on their team!
-- Jennifer W. Bundy-Cobb, CEBS
Vice President, Senior Benefit Advisor, The Wilson Agency, LLC
In observing and working with Rod over the past 15 years, I have learned the importance of building strong, meaningful relationships with our clients, broker partners, business partners and internal team members. These relationships are a result of being trustworthy, knowledgeable, solution-oriented and addressing things in a very positive manner. I feel privileged to have Rod as a friend, a colleague and a leader within our organization.
-- Shane Heigis, Director of Account Management
While we came together over the analysis and reporting of data, we were able to arrive at a greater vision for addressing the forces of change in the health system. Through my relationship with Kirsten, bonds have been forged between our two companies. This relationship has influenced other organizations and their leaders. Kirsten’s intelligence, sense of humor, and lack of pretension enables her to interact comfortably with all people. These character traits foster the collaboration and silo-busting that are essential ingredients for the transformation of healthcare and the promotion of wellbeing in our region.
-- Dr. Paul Cook, President and CEO, Rocky Mountain Health Network
Kirsten was born to a family of innovators and lives up to that reputation. With Futuristic and Strategic amongst her “top five” strengths, Kirsten sees possibilities for new models of health delivery to better serve the needs of EBMS members. Kirsten is currently leading two initiatives including a medical home pilot and a consumer engagement pilot in partnership with HealthShare Montana, Rocky Mountain Health Network, Dossia and HeW. She maintains a laser-focus on transforming EBMS from a traditional TPA to a strategic partner for members, organizations and communities.
-- Jarrod Weenum, miCare Business Operations Manager
LynAnn is a highly strategic executive who is skilled at developing, communicating and implementing marketing and meetings strategies. She consistently raises the performance-bar in producing dynamic, engaging and content-rich programs for her team and members. LynAnn is one of the rare professionals who combines sharp business acumen with the ability to make others around her comfortable and ready to improve. Having presented at hundreds of events, I can say LynAnn is a star in the industry and one of the true leaders in her field.
-- Rich Horwath, President and CEO, Strategic Thinking Institute and Author
While most of us plan in incremental steps, LynAnn Henderson plans big. Really big. She doesn’t have time for the small steps. Her vision inspires her and she trusts her inner guide to lead her in the right direction. After knowing and working with LynAnn for many years, I trust her vision explicitly. She knows where she’s going and always--and I mean always--leads those who follow her into the championship arena.
-- Shelley Van Atta, EBMS Strategic Marketing & Public Relations
Having known Kevin for many years, he distinguishes himself from other TPA executives in two important ways. First, he has a very clear vision for EBMS and for transforming the company into more than "just a claims payor". He sees the company as a health and wellness company that can truly impact the lives of his membership. The second attribute he displays is a genuine affection for his employees. It is cliche to say someone views his employees as family, but Kevin truly does. I have been with him in both personal and professional settings and his view of his team has never wavered. All decisions are made with this in mind, not just the bottom line.
-- Thomas Partlow, Past President, Health Care Administrator’s Association (HCAA)
Kevin’s management style is very inclusive, as he empowers his leadership team to bring well thought out plans to the table and keeps our organization focused on core values of commitment, excellence and innovation. He has a passion for serving the needs of our clients and accomplishes this by looking after EBMS employees' wellbeing.
-- Melissa Lyons, Director of Human Resources and Training

As the chief executive at your organization, you will benefit from a workforce that is engaged and boosts strong wellbeing in all areas of their lives. You see when employees don’t show up, or give their best effort and how that erodes productivity and costs the organizations millions of dollars because of poor physical and emotional (mental) health. Similarly, you have a keen appreciation for those employees who are thriving, using their talents each and every day and are engaged in the workplace, resulting in a higher level of engagement of their co-workers, creation of new ideas, as well as enhanced customer engagement. These employees are also engaged in their own health, taking proactive steps for prevention, managing any areas of concern and with this, saving your organization millions of dollars. Simply put, individual and organizational health can be measured, managed, and quantified and EBMS is the company to help you do this.
